Northern
Telecom Data Systems (now absorbed into the NORTEL group)
was one of the early champions of the electronic office environment.
Expanding
from their data-processing background in the UK (where they acquired
Data 100 as an entry to the European marketplace), the company
pioneered the use of central servers supplying client applications
to office networked workstations and desktop computers.
On
a technical front, these systems moved away from Unix based servers
in favour of Xenix for its compatibility with MS-DOS. At the same
time the company broached the relatively new field of office ergonomics
by adopting, across is range of systems, a "backlit"
dark-on-light monitor to relieve the potential for eye-strain.
The
resulting system, known as the "VIENNA Office" suite,
benefitted from a full range of integrated-office software which
included word-processing, spreadsheet and database as well as
graphical applications.
